Dog training can be a rewarding experience, at least when done correctly. Some think of it as an art form or special talent that only a chosen few can perform well. The truth is that, just like people, every dog is different and you can't expect them all to react the same way. However with some patience and acquired knowledge, dog training can lead you to a life of mutual respect and the freedom to enjoy life together with benefits for each of you. It is more than just teaching simple commands such as sit or stay, it is as much about teaching ourselves to understand the canine mentality.

Training

Dog training is about communication and communication is a two way street. Learning how to really communicate with your dog is learning about how to think in the canine world, not your own. Understanding pack structure, learning to control your own emotions and the importance of exercise, discipline and positive reinforcement are vital elements of a successful dog training program.

Behavior

Dog training is more of a method of behavior analysis and communication than strict reward/punishment dogma. Dogs need the pack structure to understand their position in the environment and assuming the pack leader position is a requirement for a harmonious relationship. Nature has evolved a system that every dog understands; you just need to learn how they think to be an effective dog trainer. The main reason behind troublesome dog behavior problems is the human element misunderstanding how canines see the world. The good news is no individual animal or breed is hopeless. With understanding, almost any animal can be retrained to act within nature's rules and overcome the human inspired mistakes of the past.

Methods

Understanding the importance of exercise cannot be understated in helping to achieve a balanced state of mind, ready to learn. Knowing the difference between punishment and discipline is crucial to helping to avoid repeating incorrect behavior. Praising the good and refusing to accept anything less is the way of the pack leader. Consistency in your approach to dog training will yield positive results in the shortest time possible. When you truly understand how he or she thinks, you may be amazed at how easy to train and how eager it is to learn. And nothing you do with your dog is more rewarding than that.

Techniques

Many training techniques are out there, not all of them good, and though you can send your pet away to a training school I usually don't recommend this since you really need to learn alongside him or her so you will know how to reinforce the "new" techniques. Also this bonding experience of learning together will only enhance your relationship with your buddy.

Dog training is definitely not some special talent reserved only for believers; it is understanding nature in all her wisdom. There are excellent guides available that can demystify animal behavior and provide step by step instructions to insure you are training your dog the correct way.
