Sometimes my cat will be content and purring when I'm petting him, and then suddenly his tail will start to twitch and he'll start to bite my hands. He also loves to jump out and attack my feet when I'm walking by. Why does he get carried away and attack me?

Answer Strange as it may seem, your cat is not attacking you out of hostility, but because he is a perfectly normal cat. Many cats nip and bite when they're happy, particularly if they have a low threshold for stimulation. You can learn the warning signs of when your cat's becoming overstimulated: you might feel his muscles tense or see his tail twitch or his rear end waggle. If you can tell he's about to bite, stop petting, and pet him again when he's calmed down.

If your cat is stalking your feet, he's engaging in what is called predatory-play behavior. He has a natural instinct to attack moving objects in the wild. Indoors, your feet are the only moving prey he has to ambush. The easiest way to prevent this behavior is by making sure your cat is neutered, which is the first step toward making him less aggressive.

Second, you can give him plenty of non-human moving targets to play with by trailing a string across the floor, waving feather toys, or giving him balls to bat around. Finally, you can help change his behavior by consistently discouraging his attacks. Safe and effective ways to do this are spraying him with a water bottle or using a can of compressed air--just like the ones used on computer keyboard--to make a loud hissing sound. If you are vigilant and discourage the attacks consistently, you'll take a big step toward changing your cat's behavior.

Shane (219.89.225.xxx) 2010-04-12 13:31:59

From my experience as a kitten grows up, it realises it is sharing it's world
with other creatures, us. Much like in the "basket" or what ever, mummy
is defined by milk, bites and growls. Brothers and sisters are rough housing,
bites and chasing. When dealing with us, it makes the same associations, e.g.
your mum may cook food (milk) tell the cat off, and you off (growls). As you
play you are entering yourself into the sibling zone. You are now the cats
brother or sister and you share a mother. A mother that will push you off her
knee before the cat possibly.

Now who's in charge

I HAVE A 3 YR. OLD CAT THAT I GOT FROM THE ADOPTION CENTER. IT IS A MALE THAT
HAS BEEN FIXED AND DECLAWED, FRONT ONLY, THAT WAS DROPPED OFF BY A FAMILY,
STATING HE DID NOT GET ALONG WITH THE KIDS. I UNDERSTAND A TYPE OF BITING IS
PLAYING, BUT THIS IS OUT RIGHT ATTACKS. TONIGHT I WAS IN BED WATCHING TV AND
HAD BEEN PETTING HIM, BUT HAD STOPPED, AND HE WAS JUST SITTING IN FRONT OF ME
STARING. THEN, WITH OUT WARNING OR CAUSE HE JUMPED AT ME AND BITE ME ON THE
FACE, LEAVING 2 DEEP WOUNDS, MISSING MY EYE BY LESS THAN AN INCH. WHAT DO I
DO.........RETURN HIM, WHICH COULD BE A DEATH SENTENCE FOR WHICH I DO NOT WANT
OR JUST TRY TO MOVE FASTER THAN HIM. BUT, I WAKE UP AT NIGHT AND HE IS SITTING
THERE STARING, WHATS HE THINKING. HE HAS A GREAT HOME HERE AND IS THE ONLY CAT
AND HAS THE RUN OF THE HOUSE.................SO

Gris (12.35.221.xxx) 2009-03-30 15:37:11

I got a Kitten for my twins and his always been so frindly and playfull. His a
year old now and this pass year we had to move. We live with my mother in law
and her husband now. My cat is always in the house if im home or in the garage.
Couple of months ago he attached my mother in laws husband weeks after he
attacked my mother in law and I just thought that may be he didnt like them but
now he attacked my daughter and she is the one thats always spoiling him, I dont
understand why he would do that to her. The day after I decide it to let him be
outside on his on thinking his probably tired of being indoors all the time. I
was clening the drive way and he was around, I was walking towards the door to
go inside the house and he attacked me right before i enter the house twice. I
dont know why his acting this way and I dont think I want to keep him like that
because I dont trust my kids being around him any more with out him...
I hear you

Wow, you are describing my cat! We got her from a rescue group when she was
about two months old. She would start out lovey dovey and then attack. This
behavior got her in trouble with other kittens as she would savagely bite them
when she wanted to play; now she was doing it to us. Oddly enough she wants our
attention when she acts this way. Sometimes, she would get mad that the petting
stopped and she would attack. Or she wanted to be fed or played with. We dealt
with it by putting her in time out when she acts inappropriately. She has
slowly but surely switched to gentle nips (instead of deep punture wounds). We
thought she had outgrown this behavior; she's a year old now. Not so, she
reverts whenever there is a stressor - boarding, visitors, etc. I'm making a
vet appt as she just stapled my arm. We are going to try medicating
her...prozac etc. I don't want her to bite the kids who come over for playdates.

Hello there, I have been reading through posts attempting to sort out some newly
developing problems with my cat, during which I have read that declawing can
severely affect your kitty. It may be worth reading up on this and the
emotional/psychological affects this can have.
Take care,

Monsieur Non DeClaw (178.98.209.xxx) 2010-11-18 09:23:30

Well its obvious what his problem is. He has no claws! This is so inhumane!
I think I know your problem!
Meeeoowww (67.172.181.xxx) 2010-12-03 01:25:17

The issue if that your cat is declawed! You may not have done it but by
declawing the cat you are putting its happiness and well being at risk. He is
compensating for the fact that he cannot protect himself by biting. Normally a
cat will bite you to signal "i need alone time" or "i am through
with petting time!" This procedure also causes behavioral problemssince he
is unable to do normal kitty like activities. their front clawsa are very
important for play hunting and climbing things. There is also an inclination to
scratch that soothes them, without claws this can't be done. You can always
return him but he could possibly be trained with a spray bottle set on
"stream." Good luck!

rye (77.96.147.xxx) 2009-11-01 10:31:39

he is either playing with you or trying to dominate, playing is just usual
biting and rolling on his back ect, dominant behavor his ears will become pinned
back as if he has none, when his tail twitches or his behing wiggles they
usually do this when stalking somthing they want kinda like practicing to catch
prey, if he is dominating then dont give in because if they see they are
superior to you they will think of you as a mug, if his ears are pinned back dnt
remove eye contact, show him you are the most dominant, even nip him bak on the
top of his neck where the mother grabs them, also try putting ur fingertips on
top of his head he will try and get you but if you keep them there he will get
bored of trying to get somthing he cannot reach, cat fighting is a way to
descover thier part of the pride, you must claim yours, have a fight with him
untill he runs away, if he turns his bak this is ignorance so tap him very
lightly ...

My cats night behavior
Jacey (99.164.72.xxx) 2010-04-07 23:51:56

So I've had my cat for about two years since hes a baby and hes done this since
i can remember, but i just had two babies. This extra stress really ticks me
off. In the evening, He gets really angry and attacks my leg and leads me to the
kitchen. Even if I've already fed him or my bf fed him. When I have treats I
give him some at night and maby hes doing it for treats, but we play rough all
the time and I know at this point he is really upset. Should I just stop giving
him treats, or could his teeth hurt. Also little tuffs of hair come out between
his toes lately, i don't know if that is any correlation.

Jeff (70.94.247.xxx) 2010-06-13 14:05:38

We've had our 3 year-old cat about 2 months now, from the animal shelter. The
shelter said this cat loved to be held, but when we picked him up, he had an
upper respiratory infection, so we didn't hold him much.
Now, he hates being
held. But more along the lines of this discussion, he will attack. He ISN'T
playing. He will sit with you watching tv, and you are petting him, and he is
fine. Suddenly, he wraps his paws around your arms, digs his claws in, and
bites as hard as he can. Normally he does it when we're sitting with him. This
morning, he was sitting on the kitchen table. I went to pet him, and he did the
same thing.
Evidently this is a common problem, because I see lots of posts
about it. But there is no explanation/solution?
Cat Attacks
Kelley (76.27.249.xxx) 2010-06-16 03:33:43

We bought a cat from a shelter. She is a Ragdoll and two years old. We brought
her home last November. She immediately seemed to be very loving. However, as
time went on we saw that she was a poser.
She loves our teenage son and
practically climbs all over him licking him and being affectionate. He isn't
real crazy about her.
However, I am the one who feeds her, changes her litter
etc. Whenever she wants something from me she starts out rubbing against my leg.
This is usually after I have fed her and she has finished her food. After I have
made sure she is taken good care of. If I try to walk away she jumps out in
front of me, with her tail twitching and eyes dialted she attacks me. She always
grabs a hold of my bad leg and bites me through my pant leg. The pain is so bad
sometimes it makes me cry. I have hissed, yelped to let her know it hurts. It
seems to make her mad and any attempt to move away from her she goes after me
stalking biting declawed female
kate (72.161.230.xxx) 2010-09-22 23:02:47

after being repeatedly bitten by my cat, i am finding i am not alone. My husband
brought home an adult female "rescue kitty"...all 18 pounds of her.
I
am the primary caregiver, food, water, litter changes, treats, etc. She was fine
for the first few weeks of her arrival, but now will randomly stalk me and
attack my calves or arms when i am totally unaware. I have numerous wounds on my
legs and they are deep punctures with bruising around them. This female had been
declawed by a previous owner, and her excact age is not even known. She is
spayed and thought to be a senior cat. We have two sons in the household and
they are never attacked...just me. I am the only female in the house and find
that coincidental. I am frustrated and need advice. When the attacks happen,
they are not following a play session or petting session. I can be reading a
book in bed and the cat will get the crazy eyes and pounce me, always with deep<...

Please watch "My Cat from Hell" on the Animal Planet Channel. Jackson
Galaxy is an expert on cat behavior. I have learned so much from him. One
thing he tells us to never do is hold a cat like a baby. (They feel very unsafe
in this position).

Hi, I am 13, and I got my cat for my birthday about 2 1/2 years ago. She was
about 2 months old, and she was very sweet and loving. As time went by, though,
she got meaner and meaner. She is full grown now and is fully capable of tearing
me up!! One minute, I'm watching tv or just sitting in my room, and the next she
just runs up and sinks her claws into my flesh! I don't think I can take it any
more... I might just give her away..... AND I AM THE ONLY ONE SHE DOES THIS TO!
My mom says that I am mean to her and that I am always yelling at her and

Getting an older cat neutered
wayne (172.130.252.xxx) 2010-12-26 11:06:49

I have adopted an abandoned cat that I have known since he was born. His owner
left town and left him behind. I took him in. I know he is between six and seven
years old and has neither been de-clawed nor neutered. He's strictly a house cat
now. The problem is not just the urination during mating season and that he
becomes ornery and threatens to attack at odd times. The larger but perhaps
related problem is that since I adopted him I've noticed that he chases his tail
frequently and then savagely attacks my feet and calves to the extent that
severe bleeding usually results. I assume he attacks in frustration at not being
able to catch his tail. I was wondering if this too was caused by not having him
neutered. All of this leads to my question: Considering that he weighs about
fifteen pounds, still has his claws, and can be extremely feisty and outright
dangerous, is it too late to get him neutered? Getting him to cooperate with...

Short Hair Domestic

We got a cat it is my first one.
-at the age of 8 weeks, I
already started to yell at her until now nearly 16 weeks, she is less than 5
months old, and she is all over the place, climing everywhere. I found myself
yelling at her without thinking first. As this is instinct, and I dind't realize
that I yelled that loud until after the fact.

I had water sprayed her many
times when she was bad, sometimes as severe as 10 times when she was very very
bad; thats after she repeated the behaviour several times.

I regret yelling at
the kitten, it just happend. As an owner I am guilty of yelling at such a young
loving kitty. I did not hit and will not hit my kitty. But in one instance I
grabbed her quickly and put her in the timeout cage.

After the yelling
"no" with a very deep voice, I think it is was provicated the
behavioural development in my kitty. She started to first wave her paw at me,

My wife and I had a cat, we raised her from a kitten (who knew that they made
cat formula?). When she was a kitten she literally followed me in the apartment.
Okay, from day one the kitten/cat liked me much better. I am not a pet
person--go figure.

My wife is a pet person, and she was 6 months pregnant. So,
we had a kitten. This kitten/cat would run across the room and leap up into my
arm and settle down for a half hour or more of cuddle time.

My wife was
another story. If my wife fell asleep in her recliner and her arm fell to the
side--the cat would attack it, and draw blood. If she scratched her head the cat
would attack her. One day I had to come home and get the cat off the bed (she
was still a kitten) where she had my wife cowering under the sheets. Don't
laugh. We could not let the cat go outside because she became extremely
aggressive when we would get her in the house.

If your cat is attacking you (for real, not playing) kick it's butt. For real.
It doesn't respect you as a physical threat in any way if it's doing that.
Smack that cat up like it's mother would (don't beat it to death, obviously, but
they're pretty damn tough, they can take a smacking).

All these ideas are wrong, but that's what you expect. There is something in all
of them in a room full of our best interest to explore if we did not have to
listen to the siren call of migration on the Internet.

I have a cat that attaches too. Same thing he likes the rubbing for a while
then the tail starts twitching and I stop. To me he attaches when he doesn't
get what he wants, if he wants a treat really bad, he'll attach....don't make
give him a treat though...like duh. If he wants the door open so he can go in
and outside, he'll attach or meow for a long time, coming to me and then walking
away, I know what he wants...but he's shown bad behavior, and he's not going to
get what he wants. Today though, he's attached me twice and brough blood the
second time, now I've ignoring him for a while. He's not been satisfied with the
two kinds of catfood I put out for him, so will go to the store and try to find
one that he'll eat really well. I don't like the attaches but I do realize he
wants to be roughoused and when I do he just attaches more. Confused and will
try anything.

My cat has been attacking me only when i go to bed...i can be walking to go to
my bed and he tries to attack my legs and bite them. I do not understand why he
is doing this all of a sudden. and yes he is neutered. idk what to do with him.
I love him but can't keep putting up with the constant attacks.

I have a problem cat. While I'm working at the computer, the cat will approach,
snuggle up, purr, then attack. I will not have stimulated the cat in any way.
He just bites.

How do you modify this behavior?
